Tradition Meets the New Age at Deerfield, Illinois’ Center for Holistic Medicine

Posted in About Deerfield on June 19th, 2006

The problem with most holistic practitioners, like with most of the youth today, is a lack of respect for tradition. The Center for Holistic Medicine in Deerfield, Illinois could teach a valuable lesson to the both of them. Rebels and acupuncturists, to be truly effective you must embrace and master tradition before questioning it.

The Executive Director of the Center for Holistic Medicine, Dr. Jerry P. Gore, is an M.D. who practices general medicine and psychiatry using holistic as well as traditional methods. Dr. Gore’s experience makes him a leader by example, indeed the very best kind, properly trained to direct a facility that integrates modern medicine, natural medicine, and wellness all under one roof.

I suffered from a most debilitating form of Tinnitus, a ringing in my ears, before finding the center. I used to have to buy a bottle of Lidocaine a week from the counter at Walgreen’s. The ringing would cease for a while, but I began to form a dependence on the drug and its benefits quickly dwindled.

The specialists at the Center for Holistic Medicine realize the folly of simply treating the symptoms. After a thorough evaluation they outlined a treatment plan for me. Like a traditional medical center, they informed me of the medically documented relationship between arteriosclerosis and tinnitus, and gave me vitamins and dietary suggestions. Unlike a traditional medical center, they taught me guided imagery, visualization, and deep breathing techniques, and recommended that I rub warm sesame oil twice a day on my mastoid bone behind my ear.

I followed their instructions. Within two weeks the ringing in my ear occurred much more seldom and I became less dependent on the Lidocaine. Without that constant ringing and with a newfound sense of self-directed health and well-being, today I too have valuable things to say to Deerfield’s youth, standing in a place of inner wisdom and truth.

The Marriott Suites: A Quick Way to Get Away in Deerfield, IL

Posted in About Deerfield on June 16th, 2006

A secret to my sanity: I treat myself to simple vacations. My husband and I planned a Saturday night getaway, five minutes away, at the Marriott Suites here in Deerfield, Il.

Mom and Dad have to work all summer so the kids can have their fun at sleep-away camp. Well, I figure that Mom and Dad deserve a little bit of a summer sleep-away themselves.

When the savings shoe-boxes are full, we’re off for a week in Bora Bora. Until then, I can live with relaxing in the Marriott’s indoor or heated outdoor pools, whirlpool and sauna. And with a wet bar, room service, and a chocolate on my pillow, I think this weekend will be just what I—and my husband—needed.

Man-icure at Rēnu Day Spa in Deerfield, Il

Posted in About Deerfield on June 14th, 2006

This is not your Aunt Christine’s nail salon, I explain to my buddies, but they don’t listen. This is Rēnu Day Spa, for men, women, and children, I continue, but they don’t believe me.

This is not your typical manicure. I don’t need to prove it to my buddies. And they can’t make me feel ashamed.

For one hour, twice a month, I allow myself to relax with a Reflexology Manicure at Rēnu. They massage my hands using a technique from Oriental science. They say that by massaging my hands in this particular way, they help relax organs all over my body.

I’m not sure if it’s all in my head or if it’s a miracle of science, but I leave my manicure feeling new again, twice a month re-centered. I’m not sure if it’s from peer pressure or their own issues of masculinity, but I hope my buddies get over their hang-ups soon and allow themselves to sit back and enjoy a well-earned pampering.
