Pizza for the Bleachers, In Deerfield, IL

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on June 13th, 2006

My son Anthony is a terrific center fielder, and I am a hungry old bum. Traveling to a game in Deerfield, IL  he found a fresh-cut outfield, and I found a great pizza pie to eat on the bleachers.

Craving something greasy, I took a seventh-inning stretch during Anthony’s batting warm-up. I walked around, and I quickly found my way into town.

Il Forno Pizza stood there, the perfect Italian restaurant just waiting for me it seemed, with fresh purple flowers that made a man’s man take notice. I ordered a large meat-lover’s pizza and a small serving of baked mostaccioli for my wife, had them boxed up, and brought them back to the game.

The pizza was still hot when I reached the bleachers, steaming, crunchy like I asked for it, with very fresh sausage. The mostaccioli was all gone before I had the chance to even try it.

The game had still not yet begun, and Anthony spotted me back on the bleachers before he took the field in the top of the first. He knows that he makes me proud. I think that day I made him proud too, enthusiastic and on-time, sharing pizza with home and visiting fans alike.

Thumbs Up To The DMV in Deerfield, IL

Posted in About Deerfield on June 10th, 2006

I had to renew my license — which after 10 years is reasonable. I dredded doing it. Who wouldn’t. So many people, the waiting time, the expected run-around. Curious if anyone enjoys ticking off these kinds of maintenance things that HAVE to be done. Well, going forward there’s a chance that I could. My experience farrrrrrr exceeded my expectations.

Sure, going to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Deerfield, IL early in the day helps. I was playing anthropologist, noting the process, so I timed it. In total it took one hour and 15 minutes – and the place was packed with tons of newbies chaperoned by their Moms getting their first taste of automobile bureaucracy! My take-away…not bad.  During my visit – I waited in one line, sat for my # to be called, took an eye exam, paid for my re-newal, studied, took a written test, and had my new picture taken.

But this is the kicker … everyone who worked at the DMV in Deerfield was beyond efficient, totally professional and even warm. Hmmmm … what was even more surprising is that they seem to really like their jobs. I appreciated the re-taking of my photo — even she said the first one sucked and the man @ the counter telling me the written test was pretty easy — which it was.  The bathrooms, OK not the cleanest but nothing too terrible.

Next time you have to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Deerfield, IL …just go and skip the procrastinating. Its not bad if you bring a book and accept that you’ll be parked there for about 75 minutes or so. By the way…they changed the renewal dates so I’ll be heading back there sooner than I had thought … my next renewal is in four years vs. ten. Can’t wait.

Almost Ready For The Big Splash in Deerfield, IL

Posted in About Deerfield, News, Lifestyle on June 10th, 2006

Get ready… the anxiously awaited Jewett Park project in Deerfield, IL is  almost completed, and so are the splashing renovations and repairs at Deerspring Pool.

Do not miss the inaugural event at the new Jewett Park Pavilion on Sunday June 18th that includes a Summer Sampler from 5-6:30 p.m. There will be some cool music with MaryAnn & The Professors, a kick-butt new group along with others to bring killer tunes from some of the most popular artists from the 60’s to the present. Trust me, this will be a great beather from ordinary Sunday home improvement or remodeling projects you have going on. Also, The Pavilion has a picnic area, a spanking new playground with a monster MegaTower. Clean restrooms — always a plus as is easy parking.

If the crowd gets too much for you — head to the local Starbucks coffee shop or chill out in at Whole Foods one of Deerfield’s greatest food stores.
