Increased West Nile chance in Deerfield

Posted in About Deerfield, News on August 20th, 2006

The chances of being bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile in Deerfield is even greater this year.   In fact, it’s up by 40 percent, and rising.  27 percent of mosquito pools the district sampled, tested positive for the virus.  As if a simple mosquito bite wasn’t bad enough, now we all have to worry about West Nile 40 percent more than ever before.  Deerfield, along with other Lake County communities including Highland Park, Riverwoods, Highwood and Bannockburn are experiencing an increase in mosquitoes testing positive.  The increase is up even from June.  At the beginning of summer, only 15 percent of samples tested positive, but in the first week of August, it’s up to 47 percent.  To make matters worse, this summer’s dry, hot weather is nothing but an ideal breeding ground for those pesky mosquitoes.  There have been about 25 dead birds that have had the virus across the area, from Lincolnwood to the Cook County line.

So far this summer, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has collected about 25 dead birds that had the virus across its area, which runs from Lincolnwood north to the Cook County line.  They are spraying the area on a regular basis, which is just about the most they can do.  So, needless to say, use precautions and stock up completely with OFF or whatever brand of repellent you may use.  Never run short of citronella, and so forth.  Stay away from standing water! Three people in the Cook County area have tested positive with the virus, so be careful!

Deerfield High School Robotics team building house this Saturday

Posted in About Deerfield, News on August 14th, 2006

On Saturday, August 19, twelve Deerfield High School students on the robotics team will be building a house between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The house will be 300-square-feet, will be built using inexpensive materials, and de-constructed later that evening to be shipped off to Tijuana, Mexico.  From there, the house will be re-erected, and placed on the Homes of Hope campus.  The cost of materials in the project is estimated at less than $10,000.

Reading about this project makes me feel good.  Knowing that a small bunch of high school students can work together and build a house to provide for others in such a short time is outstanding.   I think that this could set a trend for students around the world, as well as other groups and organizations.

The students involved in the project range from ages 15 to 18.  It’s good to see that students are putting intelligence and talent to good use, and that there are teachers and leaders out there who recognize their abilities to do so.

After an intense duel-off between Jeff Sernick and defending champ Tom Boettcher, Sernick came out on top, stealing the championship away from Boettcher as the new Deerfield Golf Club Champion. Sernick finished with a 72.
For the Deerfield Golf Club Womens Champion, Suzanne Riccardi, it was an easy contest. Finishing six strokes ahead of her closest competition, Riccardi came out on top with a score of 74 and 75 over the two-day period.
