Parents charged with death of teenagers

Posted in About Deerfield, News on January 3rd, 2007

Have you ever considered being one of the “cool” parents that allow their kids to invite friends over for a party, in which you provide the alcohol?  Well, think again.

Deerfield Police are cracking down on drunk driving, especially teenage drunk driving.  After the death of teenagers Danny Bell and Ross Trace last October, who were killed in a traffic accident while drinking and driving, Deerfield police knew there had to be something done about the problem.

Last Friday, police charged Jeffrey and Sara Hutsell with five misdemeanors in connection with a party and the death of Bell and Trace.  Warrants for their arrest had been issued, and the Hutsells turned themselves into police.

They were charged with two counts of violating the Deerfield liquor control act, one count of endangering the health of a child, and two counts of attempting to obstruct justice.

The first count was in relation to failing to control a party that was in their own home.  They were home during the party and were fully aware of their son having a party as well as several dozen kids coming and going from their home.

The arrests were made with hopes of cracking down on drunk driving, as well as an attempt to save the lives of others.  The arrests came after months of detailed investigations.  The Hutsells posted $5,000 bond each and are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 10

Thanks in part to community, food pantry flourishes

Posted in About Deerfield on November 10th, 2006

The Human Relations Award from the Village of Deerfield will be awarded to volunteers Lynda and Tuck Woodson of Deerfield later this month.  Thanks to all their hard work in keeping the food pantry alive, it is no longer just the two of them keeping it going, rather it is the community as a whole.   Working with Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops, students have helped the Woodson’s through community service hours needed to receive certain badges.  Other community services have also helped, including the Jr. Woman’s Club of Deerfield and the Newcomers Club, as well as many others.  These volunteers highly enjoy community effort, and hope to keep it that way.  You can find the food pantry located in the basement of the township office at 601 Deerfield Road.

Arts & Riverwoods, sure was windy

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on October 25th, 2006

Quite windy city day at Ryerson Woods, as tons of art aficionados made their way to the tent filled with art and vendors.   Metal lawn art did more than look nice, in fact, it helped keep guard over the entrance.  Saturday and Sunday’s art show was a success, taking place under the big tent in the middle of Ryerson Woods in Deerfield.  Besides viewing art, patrons saw beautiful fall colors and farm animals on site at Ryerson.
This year, things were a little different.  Instead of spreading artists among six homes and linked by bus, the event was held in one central location.  This method seemed to provide happier patrons and more people joining the festivities.  Artists were thankful for the logistical simplicity.  Besides the wind, the day was smooth sailing.
