Arts & Riverwoods, sure was windy

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on October 25th, 2006

Quite windy city day at Ryerson Woods, as tons of art aficionados made their way to the tent filled with art and vendors.   Metal lawn art did more than look nice, in fact, it helped keep guard over the entrance.  Saturday and Sunday’s art show was a success, taking place under the big tent in the middle of Ryerson Woods in Deerfield.  Besides viewing art, patrons saw beautiful fall colors and farm animals on site at Ryerson.
This year, things were a little different.  Instead of spreading artists among six homes and linked by bus, the event was held in one central location.  This method seemed to provide happier patrons and more people joining the festivities.  Artists were thankful for the logistical simplicity.  Besides the wind, the day was smooth sailing.

Stained Glass Coffeehouse in Deerfield

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on September 26th, 2006

Last Saturday, the Stained Glass Coffeehouse opened up, with folk songs by Magpie and 25 people of all ages in attendance.  The coffeehouse is located at the Congregational Church in Deerfield, 225 Wilmot Road.   This seems like a pretty neat idea for a church to establish, allowing people to come and congregate at the church, but also having fun in a different kind of setting.  There is soft lighting, small tables, coffee and lattes, musicians, etc.  Everything you could desire from a coffeehouse, except the abundance of people surrounding you typing away on laptops.  The church has a concert lineup scheduled all the way through May 2007, with musicians such as Mike Jerling, Casey and Andrew Calhoun, Chuck Brodsky and Kat Eggleston.  You can go to the Stained Glass Coffeehouse nearly on some Saturdays from 7 to 9:30 p.m.  and is open to anyone with a desire to attend.

Low turnout at Mudfest due to weather

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on September 20th, 2006

It’s a shame that something can get so much hype, so many people excited and yet all be ruined because of nasty weather.  This is what happened to this years Mudfest.  Everyone was looking forward to the busy weekend, and then mother nature had to come and ruin the party.  The temperature was cold, it was rainy.  It was no fun.  The superintendent of recreation said that the turnout was fewer than half of the usual turnout.  12 teams of 10 teens participated in the volleyball game and pie eating contest, but when it came time for tug-o-war, it was too cold for many.  It was a pretty miserable day, in which I sat at home all day long.  Hopefully next years Mudfest will be bright, sunny and warm.
