Deerfield is one busy place this weekend

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on September 8th, 2006

It may quite possibly be the busiest time of the year for the village of Deerfield.  There are three annual events this weekend that are converging.  The annual Mudfest and Historical Fall Festival is something Deerfield is used to having take place on the same weekend, which is this Sunday.  But this year,  the new Apple Pie Contest of the Farmers Market will take place on Saturday.  So there’s not much of a dilemma, because you can actually go to everything without missing out on anything.  However, you’ve gotta have the time to do it all!  Last year was the first year for the Apple Pie contest and it did well.  This year, 18 people have signed up to compete at 9 a.m. on Saturday.  It should be pretty fun seeing these people chow down some good old fashioned homemade Apple Pie.  This is a great family event and fun for all ages.  Come out and get your eyes on some of these beautiful pies that will be judged at 10 a.m.  You can buy slices of the pie and know that the proceeds will go to the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry.  As far as Mudfest goes, it’s always enjoyable to watch a bunch of teenagers having fun in a pit of mud.  Right?  At least it’s a good way for kids to get some energy out and be able to act like kids instead of being in that teenage slump where you don’t feel like a kid and you don’t feel like an adult quite yet.  The Mudfest is at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Jewett Park.  There is also going to be a tug-o-war contest between high school students and a mud volleyball game, plus, a pie-eating contest.  It’s pretty funny because the teens will be up against a team of police and fire officials, which when was the last time you played tug-o-war against police officers?  That is worth watching for sure.  Last but not least, the Deerfield Historical Society will hold its annual Fall Festival on Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Historic Village, Deerfield Road and Kipling Place.  There will be music entertainment, tours of historic buildings, pioneer craft demos and story telling for children.  It is a free event for the public, more of a country party for all to enjoy.  Come out and enjoy watching the Deerfield Community Concert Band, Hummers and Strummers, and the Big Band Sound of Deerfield.

Two Deerfield senior athletes make the Pioneer Press’s top 50 list

Posted in About Deerfield, Lifestyle on August 29th, 2006

The Pioneer Press has come up with their top 50 list of male senior athletes in suburban Chicago.  Among the list are two Deerfield greats, Scott Lieberman and Alex Loukas.  The two made the list for their outstanding achievements in tennis and football.

Scott Lieberman went all the way to second-place in state for his amazing tennis abilities.  The singles star placed top-five his sophomore and junior year with his big serve and “monster” forehand.  He is going to attend Vanderbilt University and continue his career this fall.

Alex Loukas is an all-state quarterback who signed with Stanford for the fall.  He led his team to an outstanding season, with a 9-2 record.  His statistics are impressive, scoring 16 touchdowns his senior year alone.  He also won a state doubles title in tennis his Junior year.

Congratulations boys on a job well done.

Garage sale to honor mother’s work

Posted in About Deerfield, Shopping, Lifestyle on August 22nd, 2006

Reading about amazing people in Deerfield is always great.  But reading stuff that involves two young daughters following their mother’s footsteps in helping others is even better.

Aliza Goldberg, 13, and Jessica Lane, 22 have vowed to each other to follow their mother’s footsteps, Barb Goldberg of Deerfield, and continue her passion to help others.

Recently, their mother lost her life to breast cancer at age 51.  Even during her six-year battle, she still managed to continue helping others.  Quite the remarkable woman.

Barb Goldberg is definitely someone worth remembering.  She formed an after-school enrichment program called But Enough About Me, a.k.a. B.E.A.M.   This weekend, there will be a B.E.A.M. garage sale, organized by Aliza and three of her friends, with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to help provide mammograms for women who can’t afford them.  At 136 Aspen Way in Deerfield, you can find the hardworking girls holding the sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.  At the sale,  you can find an amazing amount it items, ranging from clothes, toys, sheets and towels to bikes, bassinets and books.  The girls behind the sale have worked hard and long to make this happen, and have carefully planned out everything needed to make this successful.  As Deerfield residents, support your amazing community neighbors and head out to the amazing sale to support Goldberg’s work for others.
