Deerfield Bike Thieves Caught

Posted in Lifestyle on August 9th, 2006

“The Bicycle Thief” is no longer just a classic film. Deerfield and Lake Forest police stymie a brother-sister pair of bicycle thieves. John and Elizabeth DeBolt were both charged with residential burglary.

Police caught John DeBolt after a resident spotted him in a garage. The resident chased DeBolt when he saw he was stealing a bicycle, and police later caught John DeBolt. John DeBolt admits to stealing nine bicycles from open garages in his home, but moved them so quickly that only one was still in his garage when police nabbed him.

Looking for a fun way to spend a lazy Sunday this fall? The annual Fall Festival, put on by the Deerfield Historical Society, is just around the corner on September 10th. The event includes food, musical entertainment, reenactments and plenty of activities for children. In addition, a Childrens Pioneer Costume Contest will be held during the events of the day. While the day is officially a fundraiser for the historical society, there will be plenty activities to participate in so that it will feel more like a party than a benefit event.

Long-term fugitive Farhad Hakimi, 50, formerly of Deerfield was finally arrested after failing to appear at trial almost ten years ago. Hakimi was originally charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine, but now faces heavier charges for fleeing. He was extradited from Mexico where he had been living for the past nine years. Previous attempts at extradition were denied by Mexico, even though he had been arrested there three additional times.

Although he no longer posed any threat to the Deerfield area, the police are still relieved. Hakimi had previously possessed large enough amounts of drugs to suggest trafficking, so the police are grateful to serve justice, even if it is delayed.
