Deerfield High School Robotics team building house this Saturday

Posted in About Deerfield, News on August 14th, 2006

On Saturday, August 19, twelve Deerfield High School students on the robotics team will be building a house between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The house will be 300-square-feet, will be built using inexpensive materials, and de-constructed later that evening to be shipped off to Tijuana, Mexico.  From there, the house will be re-erected, and placed on the Homes of Hope campus.  The cost of materials in the project is estimated at less than $10,000.

Reading about this project makes me feel good.  Knowing that a small bunch of high school students can work together and build a house to provide for others in such a short time is outstanding.   I think that this could set a trend for students around the world, as well as other groups and organizations.

The students involved in the project range from ages 15 to 18.  It’s good to see that students are putting intelligence and talent to good use, and that there are teachers and leaders out there who recognize their abilities to do so.

Almost Ready For The Big Splash in Deerfield, IL

Posted in About Deerfield, News, Lifestyle on June 10th, 2006

Get ready… the anxiously awaited Jewett Park project in Deerfield, IL is  almost completed, and so are the splashing renovations and repairs at Deerspring Pool.

Do not miss the inaugural event at the new Jewett Park Pavilion on Sunday June 18th that includes a Summer Sampler from 5-6:30 p.m. There will be some cool music with MaryAnn & The Professors, a kick-butt new group along with others to bring killer tunes from some of the most popular artists from the 60’s to the present. Trust me, this will be a great beather from ordinary Sunday home improvement or remodeling projects you have going on. Also, The Pavilion has a picnic area, a spanking new playground with a monster MegaTower. Clean restrooms — always a plus as is easy parking.

If the crowd gets too much for you — head to the local Starbucks coffee shop or chill out in at Whole Foods one of Deerfield’s greatest food stores.

Camp Invention: June 12-16 at Deerfield High School

Posted in News on May 8th, 2006

On June 12-16, Deerfield High School will host Camp Invention, a program of the non-profit National Inventors Hall of Fame for students entering grades second through sixth next fall. Activities include “Spills and Chills,” a module meant to give students the opportunity to improve the safety of skateboards, testing them with dummies. “Planet Zak” is an activity where students reassemble a crashed spacecraft, make plans to find food and shelter, design clothing to protect themselves from the imaginary elements, and design ways to launch their spacecraft back into space. Sounds pretty neat. Each module of the program lasts around an hour. If you register before May 31st at (800) 968-4332, you receive $20 off the camp fee. Have fun!

Speaking with Arnie Roth
Sometimes it’s nice to have an imaginary friend. If that friend is Bugs Bunny, it calls for some delightfully incredible music, too. And that’s what the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra is offering Saturday night when the renowned ensemble, under the direction of Arnie Roth, presents “Bugs Bunny on Broadway,” a unique and family-friendly evening of classic cartoons and classical music at the Rosemont Theatre.
